Back from Bordeaux

Just arrived back from a two-day Project Management Board meeting of the EuropeanaLocal project which took place at the Archives de Gironde in Bordeaux. In many EC-funded projects the detailed management of a project takes place within the ambit of a body called the Project Management Board. This is usually made up of the co-ordinator and the work package leaders. In the case of EuropeanaLocal it also includes the Commission’s Project Officer and a representative selection of ‘general’ partners.

We discussed various issues affecting the project and in my case I gave a presentation on the results of the content survey which Collections Trust ran. This will be used to write a couple of deliverables for the first project review in July.

One of the perks of the meeting was the food (of course!) and also the opportunity to go ‘backstage’ at the Archives. Here the highlight was a mid 15th century maritime map which showed the eastern coast of the Atlantic before the voyages of Columbus. It was also interesting to hear that a lot of records relating to this area of France are kept at the National Archives at Kew. This reflects the close relationship between the English crown and Gascony in the medieval period.
