Sharing Knowledge - Working in Concert
The last two days have been spent at Europeana ‘Central’ in their offices in the Royal Library in the the Dutch capitalThere were two reasons for us to be there. First to hear about how Europeana has been working and what it plans to do next. Second to enable partners in the EuropeanaLocal and ATHENA projects to meet and hear about the other project’s work. The latter is important because of the danger of duplicating effort and oppertunities to share resources. The word in EC-funded ‘project speak’ is concertation.
Collections Trust is in an advantageous position here because we are partners in both projects, doing a similar job in both. Therefore we are key partner with the ability to act as a information conduit between both. One result of this already was that we were able to check that projects were not trying to submit the same content to Europeana.
From Europeana central we heard about how they got data into the prototype launched, briefly, in November. This seems to have involved an aweful lot of hand editing and data cleaning. No wonder they were all so tired!
Finally we had an interesting presentation on REPOX - A Metadata Space Manager. Repox features an OAI-PMH server and a metadata mapping tool both of which are important for the development of the two projects.
