Introduction to EuropeanaLocal Project - Surveying Standards
The EuropeanaLocal project began in June. This month sees the start of an important aspect of its work - a survey of metadata and terminology used by cultural organisation in Europe.
EuropeanLocal is part of a ‘cluster’ of European Commission (EC) funded projects under the general ‘banner’ of Europeana. Europeana is the public facing service, while the cluster projects will be feeding content from various sources and different types (e.g. tourist information and film).
EuropeanaLocal’s ultimate aim is to make accessible locally-held content from museums, libraries and archives. It will explore how to achieve this, particularly the technical and terminological implications.
EuropeanaLocal has the following workpackages (WPs):
- WP1 - Project management and co-ordination;
- WP2 - Metadata survey and content analysis;
- WP3 - Content harvesting and aggregation;
- WP4 - Implementation of Europeana standards and tools;
- WP5 - Dissemination and awareness raising;
- WP6 - Evaluation and progress monitoring
We are workpackage leader for WP3. Workpackages are the discrete areas of work that an EC-funded project is divided into. In addition we are giving a significant contribution to WP2 in the form of a survey of the collections that have been promised to become part of Europeana. We are also involved in all the other workpackages in some way.
